Summer Swim Meets 101
Learn about the different types of meets we have throughout the swim season! Click on the links above for details about each.
We participate in the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL) and at the end of each season, they determine our Division for the following summer. For 2024, we will swim in Division D.
We have daily practices (see practice schedule on the home page) and swim meets on Saturday mornings (A Meets), Wednesday evenings (B Meets) as well as two relay meets and two special end-of season meets. We have home and away meets (see schedule of meets and events for details).
Swimmers do NOT have to attend swim meets to participate as a Kingfish, but it is highly encouraged as a fun way to improve their swimming and have some friendly competition.
Here are some frequently used terms throughout the swim season and on our website:
"Declare", "Commit", "Sign (Opt) -in/out" - Indicates the availability of the swimmer for particular meet. You can do that on our website under our "Schedule of Events and Meets" section once the meet sign-ups are open. Refer to "How to Sign-In (Out)" for detailed instructions.
BEGINNING WITH THE 2024 SEASON: Swimmers MUST BE signed in as ATTENDING for every meet (this includes A and B Meets, Relay meets, Superstars, and DIvisionals as well as special meets like the Sara Auer mini meet. This way the Coaches know your swimmer is available and can be at the meet. Any changes to your availability after you declared and entries are submitted should be communicated to the Head Coach or Assistant Head Coach as soon as possible.
"Event" - An event is an individual swim race. Events are broken down by distance (usually 25m, 50m, or 100m during summer swim), stroke (
"Heat" – The group of swimmers who swim a race at the same time. Several heats may be held for each event.
"Heat" or "Psych" Sheets – Also referred to as a Meet Program, it is listing of all swimmers participation by event number and their entry time. The Kingfish meet programs are usually posted on our website the evening before the meet.
"Scratch" - Scratching an event is declaring that, while you are at the meet and intend to race, you will not be participating in a particular race. Scratching should only take place with the approval of the Head Coach. A scratch creates disruptions and possible delays during a meet so we encourage swimmers to have those discussions with their coach in advance.
